Postcards of Athenry, Co. Galway, Ireland
...a medieval walled heritage town
Made famous by the Pete St. John song 'The Fields of Athenry' this lovely heritage town in east Galway boasts some of the best preserved medieval defence walls of any town in Ireland.
The town's history dates back nearly 1000 years and owes it's existence to the castle. After completion of the castle, Meyler de Bermingham built the nearby aAbey in 1241.
