Photographs of the Monserrat, Catalonia, Spain
a place of beauty and a place of pilgrimage
Monserrat is a small, but highly unusual rock formation, about one hour north-west of the Catalonian city of Barcelona.
For nearly two centuries it has been a place of pilgrimage for Spaniards, but especially Catalonians. The monastry perched periously about half-way up the mountain houses the Black Madonna Shrine.
The spectacular rock formations make this a popular excursion for visitors to Barcelona. The easiest way for visitors to access is by train and cog-train or cable-car to the monastry. From here the mountain can be easily explored following a network of footpaths. There is a funicular railway from the monastry to the top.
